Brahmins living near Koti area of Hyderabad City, 57 years ago decided to form a group and started performing Panaka Pooja to Lord muruga on Shukla Shashti days. This gave them an opportunity to meet once in a month and exchange pleasantries. Appropriately they named this group as Sri Subramania Samajam. Their noble object was to create a forum for the Tamilnadu and Kerala based Brahmins to come together and help each other. Soon they started to celebrate Gokulashtami in a big way. Down the hill the group started meeting more frequently on all important religious occasions like Navarathri, Ayyappa Pooja etc. Apart from this they decided to perform Ekadasa Vara Rudrabhishekam every month on the 3rd Sunday with Annadanam to devotees attending the programme. Thus the seeds sown half century ago has grown into a big tree extending its shadow over a large area of Hyderabad – Secunderabad.
From a small house in Koti the Samajam was moved to a new building with a Bhajan Hall, a Kitchan for preparing Prasadam and a small Dining area in New Nallakunta. During the 50th year of the Samajam in 2002. Rightly the new facility has been named as Suvarna Jayanthi Mandapam. Taking advantage of the facilities in the new premises the Samajam activities have been expanded over the years. Today this organization is the front runner in fulfilling the socio – religious needs of the community at large and Brahmin community in particular. On the social front samajam has undertaken Poor Feeding-Annadanam, Free Medical Camp – Arogya Danam and Assistance in Education – Vidya Danam o a regular basis. Also a free Horoscope Bank is being run to help the Brahmin Community to find suitable match for their wards.
It is pleasant sight to watch the gathering during the Samajam functions with males in their clean white Dhothis or Panchagacham and female in Saris or Madisar Pudavai. In these days of rat race for earning the extra income one can find many youngsters attending the functions rendering voluntary service. In fact the Samajas best asset is their dedicated volunteers who render honorary service to make the functions successful.
No Samajam function will be complete without the Brahmana Samaradhana with South Indian food served in courteous manner on plantain leaves in traditional style.
